A WALK IN THE PARK

Make yourself comfortable and close your eyes. Take a big deep breath and then slowly breathe out… that’s it… and again… slowly in…. and out…. Very good. Now take another deep breath in and out and shift your attention to behind your eyes and up a little bit then back a little bit to the center of your head… take another big breath in and out…. Very good…

 

As you are laying there in the chair, you are probably trying to concentrate. What if I tell you, you don’t need to concentrate at all? I don’t want you to concentrate on my voice. I don’t want you to focus… The fact is, you don’t even need to try. Your subconscious mind has an excellent ability to concentrate… It will isolate every outside noise, isolate every random thought for your conscious mind to work on… your subconscious mind will only concentrate on my voice… following my guide… Your subconscious is the part that allows your heart to beat; allow you to walk without thinking about which foot needs to go first; allows you to brake whilst driving… it has been working for you the entire time. It will keep working for you, protecting and serving you like a loyal soldier… So you don’t need to do anything, or try to work out anything. The only thing you need to do right now is to relax…

Now, I want you to think about a time when you felt very peaceful and very relaxed… It may be the time you went on a holiday to a tropical island… or perhaps it is when you spent time with your family during Christmas… or even just the awesome feeling you have after a gym session or a relaxing massage… good, now feel this feeling and on the next breath, take that feeling all the way in… and breathe out all the bad feelings that make you feel uneasy… such as worry, stress or tension… Very good… Now, every time you inhale, breathe in this great feeling even further into the body… feel it spread into the head, relaxing every single muscle on the face, the scalp, and the jaw… then feel it spread through the neck and shoulders… all the way down to the tips of the fingers… every time you inhale, the good feelings spread a little further into the body and bring you deeper and deeper… and every time you breathe out the bad feelings, you let go of all the worry, stress and tension… and you feel 10 times more relaxed…and you go 10 time deeper… that’s right, breathe in… going deeper and deeper… breathe out…. Feeling more relaxed and going deeper… You are doing great…

 

It is a lovely summer night, after it has just stopped raining… You are walking in a park with your family. This is your most favourite park. It is quiet and safe. The warm yellow light from the lamps illuminate the pathway. You can smell the soil that was just washed by the rain… Occasionally there are residual rain droplets that drop down from the leaves of the trees above you… A smooth breeze softly brushes across your skin and through your hair. It is sooo refreshing… You can hear two of your younger brothers laughing and chasing each other from a distance. They are talking about something goofy as usual that makes you smile… Your parents are holding hands walking right next to you. You hear your dad is wearing his favourite slippers, making a flipping noise on the wet ground… Your dog is quietly following everyone and runs to your brothers to check on them often… You feel very relaxed, easy, and safe. You even feel you can take on a new challenge with your whole family there beside you…

 

So, you suggest to the family to take a right turn which leads you to a part of the park you have never been to before. Your whole family smiles at you and happily follows your suggestion… As soon as you turn to the right, all the lights get dimmer. The further you walk the dimmer the lights get. Surprisingly, the dimmer it is the more relaxed you get. The temperature is just right. You can smell the flowers that bloom during the night. Take a deep breath in… let the subtle fragrance flow into your nose, through the entire upper body and reach your lungs… take a deep breath out… let all the uncertainty out as you settle into the new environment… The lights get dimmer and dimmer, the pathway gets darker and darker. You cannot really see well. But you know it is safe because your family is right beside you. Now, close your eyes just feel what is around you… The smooth breeze, the rain droplets occasionally dropping onto your head, the crickets signing, the Christmas beetles humming around, your brothers chatting, your dad’s flip flops, your dog who is busy walking around making sure everyone stays together… even with your eyes closed, everything is still so familiar and makes you feel so comfortable.

 

As you are walking along this new path, you notice in the distance a dim light at the end. As you approach it, you realise that this is your new apartment. Your brothers run to you, and each of them gives you a big hug and they each put a pebble into your hand. One says ‘love’, and the other says ‘support’. You put them into your pocket and kiss them goodbye… You keep walking with your parents and your dog. Your dog quickly runs towards you. You bend down to pet him and he drops a pebble into your hand. This one says ‘guidance’. He wags his tail to say goodbye and runs back to your brothers… You put the pebble into your pocket and keep walking towards the apartment with your parents. You stop right outside the door. Your mum gives you a big hug and kisses you on your forehead. She gives you two pebbles. They say ‘self-care’ and ‘independence’. You hold them in your hands and feel the warmth they bring to you, just like your mum herself. She cares about everyone and nurtures herself well. She is an independent woman and now she passes this quality to you. You put it into your pocket and look at your dad. He pats your shoulder and gives you two pebbles. They say ‘strength’ and ‘bravery’. You look at him. He is strong, not just physically strong, but mentally as well. He went through difficult situations yet is still brave enough to take on different challenges, one after another. You put the pebbles into your pocket and you know you have your dad’s qualities within you too. Now, give both your parents a hug, say thank you to them, and wave goodbye.

 

You turn around and open the door to your new apartment. It is too dark to see anything clearly. But with all the pebbles in your pocket from your family, you feel nothing but love, support, guidance, self-care, independence, strength and bravery… You get into your bed, so comfortable… so relaxed… Close your eyes and close your mind’s eye. All the doors are locked and you are in a safe environment.

 

You know from this moment on, you can fall asleep easily every night when you want to. You will have no problem getting a good night sleep without waking up in the middle of the night unless it is absolutely necessary. You are from a loving and supportive family. You inherited all these wonderful qualities from your parents… strong, positive, brave and caring… From today on, you will be very happy and very curious to live in this new environment. Every day you will tuck yourself into bed, warm and comfy. You will have a good night sleep to restore all the energies so you can welcome a new day tomorrow… It makes you excited just thinking about all the opportunities you are going to have… Each project you work on, each new person you talk to, each new place you discover will make you stronger, more independent and more confident, just like your family.
