Okay young lady/man… time to have some fun… are you ready? When you’re ready, close your eyes for me… and make sure you are totally comfortable there… because this might be a bit like falling asleep… sort of… but you’ll be able to hear my voice all the way through… and you will have total control… so there’s nothing that can hurt you… or harm you… in any way… you are totally safe… and mum/dad… are right here…

Let’s go somewhere magical! This will be just like watching a movie… doesn’t need to be hard to do… so with your eyes closed… just think about your breathing for a minute… you don’t have to change anything… just listen… with your eyes still closed… and keeping them closed… or it won’t work as well… just listen… to your breathing for a few moments… (pause)

Good… you’re doing great… this will be fun… or you wouldn’t be here!  So let’s do a bit of imagining… for a little bit… do you remember a fun ride… that you went on one time… at an amusement park? Can you picture… in your mind… what that was like? Even if you’re a bit old for it now… or can’t remember it clearly… that’s okay… just imagine one of those gentle ride things… and you’re in it… but it’s specially made for you… it’s something you can [sit comfortably in]/[lay down in] and enjoy… for a moment… mum and/or dad are off at a nearby cafe… having coffee… and they’re watching from a distance… but it’s your ride…

All you have to do is picture it in your mind… nod your head if you can see it… (wait)… good! You’re doing a great job… this is not hard is it? (wait) Okay, great!

So we’re going to be on this ride… for a bit… and it’s very soft and gentle… not fast or scary… and we don’t want it to be… we want you to relax and see the ride more clearly… it has some gentle ups… and downs… and each down feels nice… it’s relaxing you… and you’re enjoying it… no-one else is around… it’s just you on the ride… enjoying some peace and a special treat… your very own ride!

You go down a bit… and feel more relaxed… then flat for a bit… then down a bit more… and you feel more relaxed… then flat… then down again… even more relaxed… good!  So this ride has a place… where it is taking you… and you just know… for sure… that this is a nice place… a really nice place… that you want to visit… so much… and you know it will help you with anything you need… so just relax for a few moments… and imagine the ride taking you… to this place… (pause)

Now… your ride slowly comes to a stop… and you can imagine getting out… at your special location… here, at this place… is a fun game… you have to stand behind a line… and throw things at targets… and if you hit the targets… you get a reward… can you do that? Nod your head if you can… (wait)

Okay, great! So before you throw anything, you need to know a couple of simple rules… for this game… all you have to do… is wait until I say “go”… and then you can throw… can you do that? (wait) Okay!

So there are three targets… and there is a prize for hitting all three targets… that’s pretty cool! You’re wanting to start, aren’t you… and find out what the prize is? Okay… but you don’t know what you’re throwing yet… (pause) There is a nice lady here… and she comes up to you and gives you three small bean bags… ready to toss at the targets… but don’t throw yet!

Okay… one little rule for this game… if you are successful and you hit the target… the game will do something… a trick… an image… or some lights… or sounds… or something else! Just remember what you see happen… in your mind… but don’t tell me!  So…   you have to remember what you see when you hit each target… and tell me later. Don’t tell me now… okay? Later! Got it? (wait)

Good!  You’re doing great… now, we’re just about to get started, but wait until I say “go”… (pause)

First bean bag… “go!” … good! Remember what you saw when your bag hit the target…

Second bean bag… “go!” … awesome! Remember what you saw when your second bag hit the target…

Third bean bag… “go!” … great! Remember what you saw again this time, for the last target…

This is your game, and you didn’t miss a single target! Well done! Okay…. Now the nice lady smiles at you and gives you a prize… remember what she gives you, but don’t tell me… not yet… okay? Good!

Now you hop back into your ride… and it takes you all the way around… and back to where you started… that was fun, wasn’t it? Did you remember what you saw in the game?  Don’t tell me yet! (pause)

So now, you hop back out of the ride… and you’re going to return back to this room… and you can tell me after you open your eyes… but wait for me to tell you when… to open your eyes…

So on the count of ten… we will return to this room and you can open your eyes… one.. two… moving fingers and toes… three… four… feeling back in your arms and legs again… five.. six… the rest of your body… seven… eight… heart rate and breathing normal again… and nine.. ten… open your eyes!

Now, tell me:

  1. What happened with the first target?
  2. What happened on the second target?
  3. What happened for the third target?
  4. What prize did the lady gave you?
  5. The lady at the game: what colour was her uniform?

That last question was a surprise!

Ask them how it went for them. The idea of getting them to remember is so that they are holding information in their minds for a future time, so that they know they need to plan and organise their thoughts. Even more importantly, they need to describe several scenes, in sequence, which can be challenging for an ASD/ADHD diagnosed child. In trance, though, it’s easier, and then they have a belief in their minds that they can capture and describe scenes when in conversation with others. There’s also rules for them to follow, which should be easier in trance.
