TREASURE ISLAND

This script is suitable for children between the ages of 7 to 12 years old who have experienced any form of bullying which has led to feelings of anger, sadness and a lack of confidence. This script is useful for removing negative feelings and reinforcing confidence and positive feelings by reminding the child how loving, strong and talented they really are.

I want you to lay comfortably on the chair and in moment I am going to ask you to close your eyes… I am here to keep you safe so you will have nothing to worry about when your eyes are closed okay? When I ask you to close your eyes, I want you to stretch both your arms out like this…(demonstrate both arms extended out in front of body)… And all I want you to do is listen to my voice and the words that I say, whilst using your creative mind to visualise what I am saying… At the end, I will ask you to open your eyes and have a look at your arms and you will notice that they are in different places than when you began…

 

Let’s see if I can move your arms without you trying to move your arms… When you’re ready, go ahead and close your eyes and place both arms out just like I demonstrated to you… Good…

 

Now on one hand I am going to tie a very, very, big helium filled balloon… This balloon is so big and is floating very, very, high up into the air… Your arm is feeling so light that it slowly begins to move up with the balloon… I am now tying a second large balloon on the same hand and now your arm feels even lighter… This arm is floating up and up with the balloon…

 

On the other hand, I am going to place a big schoolbook onto it… This book makes your arm feel very heavy… I am now placing a second book on this hand and now your arm is feeling even heavier and it wants to fall onto your lap… Your arm is feeling tired now and it begins to fall down gently because the books are very heavy…

 

Now in a moment I am going to count from 3 to 1 and on the count of 1 I want you to open your eyes and have a look at your arms and as soon as I click my fingers your eyes will close and you will feel very relaxed. 3… 2… and 1… Opening the eyes… This is how imaginative you are…You’ve done so well…

 

*Click fingers* Gently closing your eyes again… Feeling very relaxed now… and again I will count down from 3 to 1… On the count of 1 I will gently push down on both your arms onto your lap and your body will suddenly feel very calm.

 

3… 2… and 1… *gently push arms onto lap* Falling down now into a very relaxing and gentle hypnotic state… Good… You’re doing so well…

 

As you keep using all your senses, I am going to ask you to imagine some more things… You don’t need to do anything… All you have to do is listen to the sound of my voice… There is no need to think of anything… Just allow your mind to take you to where it would like to go… Listening to my words… I will be here to keep you safe…

 

I want you to picture yourself on a pirate ship sailing in the ocean… Your family and friends are on this ship with you, but you are in charge of the ship. You are the captain of this ship… The sun is warm, and the clouds are clear… there are even seagulls hanging out on the edge of the ship, chirping away on this perfect day…

 

Up ahead you notice two islands… I want you to steer towards the first island on the left-hand side… Once you arrive at the first island, I want you to hop off the boat and walk onto the land… On this land you will notice a big brown and golden treasure chest… I want you to go ahead and open the chest and see what you find inside. The first item you pull out is a photo of a very happy memory… It could be of a time you received a new toy or gift, when you had fun playing with your friends or went out for family vacations… You can choose what happy memory appears on this photo, and when the memory appears, I want you to look at that moment and notice the feelings that you feel in your body… How do these happy feelings make you feel inside? Perhaps you feel joyful and excited… Take the time to enjoy the feelings of this positive memory…

The second item is a toy that you have always wanted, this makes you even happier! I want you to imagine yourself playing with this toy and feel how it makes you feel inside… The third item is a bravery award with your name on it for always being so courageous in life, for standing tall and strong no matter what you experience… The fourth item is a list of all the great things you have achieved in your life that mum and dad have been so proud of. You have achieved so much, and you are very special, very talented and loved…

 

Now… I want you to reach out into your pocket where you will find a pen and a notepad. On each sheet of paper, I would like you to write words that describe the happy feelings that you are experiencing in this moment… Some words you could write down are, happy, excited, brave, good, strong, calm, fearless, fun, loved… And when you are finished, I want you to place the pieces of paper into your pocket… (Pause, allowing child to visualise)

 

Now that you have placed the pieces of paper in your pocket… I would like you to walk back onto the ship and sail towards the other island on the right… Once you have reached the second island… I want you to hop out of the ship and walk onto the land. Here you will find a bon fire with a safety cage surrounding the fire so that you can only look at it from a distance… As you look into the fire, you will begin to see a time that made you feel angry and/or upset… Perhaps it was a time when someone said something that hurt your feelings… or a time where you felt alone… Whatever the memory is… I just want you to watch it and see how it made you feel at the time… I don’t want you to experience it in your body, I just want you to watch how you react to that time that made you feel angry and/or upset…

 

Now… I want you to take the pen and notepad back out of your pocket and I would like you to write words that described how you must have felt at the time… Some words could be… Sad, bad, angry, upset, scared, worried, fearful…(Pause allowing child to visualise)

 

Now… Instead of placing the notes back into your pocket, I want you to go back to the ship and ask mum and dad (or other guardian/superhero) to come over to the bonfire… With their help and support, together you throw the pieces of paper into the fire… As each paper burns, you are removing those negative feelings in your body as you no longer want to experience them. You know that these feelings do not make you feel good… As mum and dad throw the sheets of paper into the fire, I want you to reach out into your pocket and read out loud the words to describe how you felt on the first island, where you felt positive and happy…

 

As you read the words out loud, you activate the meaning of the words in your body… Each word makes your body grow brightly, making you feel stronger and more confident. The negative feelings are no longer in your body, and you are now filled with positivity… Take a look at the bonfire and replay the memory that made you angry and/or upset… Knowing that you have burnt away the negative feelings and are only filled with positive feelings… How do you react differently? Perhaps you take a deep breath and bravely walk away from the situation… or perhaps you speak up for yourself in a calm and understanding tone… Whatever your reaction is, you do it in a more thoughtful way because you no longer feel angry and/or upset, you no longer want to feel that way, so you no longer do. Just watch how this memory plays out…

 

You’ve done so well and it’s time to go home now… So, I want you to now return to the ship with mum and dad and sail back to the main shore where you can all go home together… I want you to feel how different you feel compared to the beginning of the journey in the ocean…

 

In a moment I am going to count from 1 to 5 and on the count of 5 your eyes will gently open… Now whenever you feel that a situation is going to make you angry or upset, just remember that you have burnt away the feelings that do not make you feel good. You no longer want to feel that way and so you won’t… All you have to do is remember the positive feelings that make you feel good which are right in your pocket. When you reach into your pocket, you will remember that you are brave, talented, strong, confident, very, very, loved and much, much, more…

 

So, when you’re ready…1, feeling your body on the chair… 2, noticing the sounds within this room… 3, beginning to wiggle your hands and toes… 4, slowly opening your eyes… and 5, eyes open… Feeling good, feeling great.
